Performance of I-HSPA vs Fixed Wireless

• I-HSPA is similar to HSPA+, the 3GPP Rel 7 version of HSDPA/HSUPA of 3GPP Rel 5.

• It is an overlay on the 3G/W-CDMA/UMTS mobile phone system and as such is designed for short term mobile connections.

• The technology is limited by designing for battery operation and “best effort” to make a voice call.

• It is an afterthought to an existing mobile Voice system, the 2G USA CDMA-one.

• LTE (FWA) is not an I-HSPA upgrade but a different system.

• Fixed Wireless systems (FWA) are not based on technology for Mobile Phone calls.

• It’s designed entirely for Broadband delivery without phone wires, coax cable or fibre.

• Power and Aerials are not constrained by portability.

• Costs

• Mobile networks are much more expensive than Fixed Wireless Networks.

• Mobile Masts are often sited to facilitate mobile voice calls rather than Fixed Computer usage.

• For simplicity a single sector cell is shown. Real masts typically have three sectors, which uses three times the spectrum but gives three times the capacity per mast/Cell.
